Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From old vines on the granite soils of the Kaefferkopf in Ammerschwihr, the NV La Montagne du Scarabée Solera is a fascinating oxidative rarity of which only 200 bottles are filled every year from a réserve perpétuelle sous voile started with the 2018 harvest. The bright, bronze-orange colored wine from lot KAEFSOL assembles the vintages 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 and opens with a clear, intense and elegant, concentrated and fiery, smoky bouquet of oxidized fruits, iodine, turf, nuts and small yellow plums and is, although free of chalk, reminiscent of Sherry, Vin Jaune and Islay whisky. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, rich and concentrated, viscous and voluminous, even warming wine with many dimensions yet also lots of salinity, fruity texture and elegant power on the alcoholic (yet unfortified) and tannic finish. Bottled in late October 2022, this is still an extremely young flor-power white that should be terrific with matured and crystalline cheeses such as Sbrinz, Parmigiano or Manchego. Even Époisses could fear this persistently saline and structured wine that is fascinating in all its richness yet certainly not everybody's cup of tea. Rare enough. 15% stated alcohol. No added sulfides. Natural cork. Tasted in February and March 2023.

Features

Description

La Grange de l'Oncle Charles La Montagne du Scarabée Solera is an exceptional wine, born from the combination of tradition and uniqueness. Produced in the prestigious region of Alsace, France, this wine is the result of a meticulous winemaking and ageing process and comes from old vineyards located on the granitic soils of Kaefferkopf in Ammerschwihr.

Winemaking

The ageing of this wine follows the Solera method, a traditional process that blends different vintages to achieve exceptional consistency and complexity. This method contributes to its distinctive flavour profile and aged character. Montagne du Scarabée Solera is an oxidative rarity, with only 200 bottles filled each year from a perpetual reserve under velo flor started with the 2018 vintage. This wine blends the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 vintages, creating a unique complexity and depth.

Taste

La Grange de l'Oncle Charles La Montagne du Scarabée Solera is distinguished by its intense and elegant bouquet. It has a concentrated, smoky aroma, with notes of oxidised fruits, iodine, peat, nuts and small yellow plums. Despite being lime-free, it is reminiscent of Jérez, Vin Jaune and even Islay whisky.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, dense, rich and concentrated. Its viscous and voluminous texture is accompanied by a remarkable warmth, offering a multidimensional taste experience. Despite its richness, it retains a remarkable salinity and fruity texture, culminating in an alcoholic (though not fortified) and tannic finish. With a declared 15% alcohol and no added sulphites, this wine is a pure and powerful expression of its terroir.
It is ideal with mature, crystalline cheeses such as Sbrinz, Parmigiano or Manchego, and can even stand up to Epoisses, standing out for its persistent salinity and structure.
