Prieto Picudo is a native variety from Castilla y León region. This rustic variety is used for Land of Castilla y León Wine. Its clusters are small and packed with small berries of thin skin. It has early to medium budding and early ripening. It is not a vigorous variety and yields are low. Prieto Picudo cannot endure drought and is more suitable for fresh soils and temperate climates. It is also prone to sunburns and powdery mildew.
Prieto Picudo wines are cherry coloured, high in alcoholic content, very scented (wild fruits and black currant bouquets) and high acidity. It is recommended in the production of wines blended with Mencía variety.
Some acclaimed wine producers are Dominio de Tares and Pricum by Bodegas Margón.
