Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Tasting a new vintage of Las Beatas is always a special moment. The 2017 Las Beatas comes from grapes picked earlier than ever, from a year that was warm and dry, marked by frost in late April and low-yielding, despite which the wine is still 14% alcohol and feels delicate, floral and mysterious. It fermented in an open 3,000-liter oak vat with indigenous yeasts and matured in 1,200-liter oak foudre for 14 to 16 months. This is always a mysterious wine, completely different and changing—'tridimensional,' as Telmo says—and I thought about an Agatha Christie novel. As it happens with Tabuerniga, Las Beatas transcends the conditions of the vintage; it's nuanced and insinuating, with subtle and very elegant aromas and a textured palate with a very fine, silky thread. A lovely and delicate expression of Rioja that is full of light and energy. There is a jump in quality from Tabuerniga here. 1,501 bottles were filled in May 2019.

Features

Description

Las Beatas is an aged red wine belonging to the Compañía Telmo Rodríguez that is made from four indigenous grape varieties: Garnacha Tinta, Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha Blanca.
These vines come from an old single vineyard in the town of Labastida at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, in La Rioja (Spain).
The vineyard measures 1.9 hectares and sits on terraces with conglomerate soils mixed with sandstone and marl.
The production of this wine is limited, being nowadays considered an iconic and modern Rioja.
In the gastronomic field it is the perfect accompaniment to grilled lamb, roasted red meats and ideal for a very special occasion.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum moment of ripeness. On the other hand, respectful agriculture is practised and biodynamic techniques are applied to protect the natural balance.
After the manual harvest, the Las Beatas grapes are macerated and fermented in the winery with indigenous yeasts in open oak vats of 3,000 litres. The wine is then aged for 15 months in 1,200-litre barrels.

Taste

It is a smooth, traditional and modern red wine, where fine, round tannins, an energetic expression and a deep, fresh finish stand out in an incomparable way.

A balanced red wine

Las Beatas is a red wine with the uniqueness of La Rioja, full of light and energy, it is subtle, very delicate, mysterious, completely changeable and deeply elegant.
This red wine is a worthy representative of the blend of autochthonous varieties grown in the best soils and with the best viticulture. This is another example of excellence provided by Telmo Rodríguez in his search for vineyards and the production of wines of the highest quality.
