The 2021 El Jardín de las Iguales Garnacha has a lot more freshness and acidity than the 2020 I tasted next to it. From a cooler growing season, the grapes were picked on September 9 and fermented with full clusters in concrete with indigenous yeasts and a 92-day maceration. It matured in well-seasoned, neutral 456-liter oak barrels for 13 months. There's a lot of muscle here along with tension, and the wine is tight and initially closed. It needs air (and possibly time in bottle) and takes time to take off with shy notes of violets, citrus and a spicy twist. But what's amazing is the mouthfeel—it's beautifully textured, with tannins that are ultra-refined, chalky and energetic. The balance and elegance are superb. It's clean, precise and focused, with a lot of energy and light; it's ethereal but with great inner power. This is the best wine they have yet produced. 769 bottles were filled in March 2023.
