Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Produced with grapes from Ribeira Sacra, the pale red 2017 Mercenario Parcela Sanduriñas is a blend of Garnacha Tintorera, Mencía, Mouratón, Sousón, Grao Negro and even some white Palomino picked at a little over 11% alcohol from a centenary plot in the Chantada zone, in Sabadelle, on gneiss terraces. It had a soft and long vinification with a significant amount of full clusters and some foot treading; it finished fermenting and matured for seven months in two 400-liter clay tinajas (amphorae). There is a clear cider note on the nose that might put many people off and can be an acquired taste. But there are also bright red berries, wild herbs and flowers and aromas that might remind you of some natural Beaujolais. The palate is fresh, light, tasty and easy to drink, with low alcohol, acid berry flavors and hints of blood orange as well as fine-grained tannins and the clear mouthfeel and texture of granite. It grew on me, but this is not a wine where you're going to find the zone or varieties but rather the fresh and irreverent style in which it's produced. 1,600 bottles were filled unfiltered and unfined in August 2018.
