Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The varietal mix is somehow different in the 2016 7 Fuentes El Lance, which has a majority of Listán Negro with 45% and then 25% each Vijariego Negro and Castellana Negra, with the remaining 5% between Malvasía Rosada and Baboso Negro. It's from the same four vineyards as the 2015, ranging from ten to 200 years of age on clay and sandy soils at 350 to 550 meters altitude. Natural fermentation with 30% full clusters was carried out for all except for a fraction of the Listán Negro, which was destemmed and fermented in concrete vats. The élevage lasted nine months and was in used 500-liter oak barrels. Right now, there is some reduction in the nose, so decanting it energetically in advance could be a good idea. It has a little less alcohol than the 2015, and it feels fresher and very tasty, with refined tannins and a salty, mineral finish. There is no oak here, the 500-liter barrels feel a lot more adequate than the smaller ones to respect the soils' character and the subtleness and aromatic complexity of these grapes. 8,000 bottles were filled in July 2017.
