Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The only wine produced here since 1991 is the San Vicente, from a single 18-hectare vineyard planted in 1985 with Tempranillo Peludo, Finca La Canoca. The 2020 San Vicente had a traditional vinification, destemmed grapes fermented for nine days with pumping over twice per day and a maceration of 22 days. It matured in new barrels (90% French and 10% American) for 20 months, including malolactic. It has 14.1% alcohol and a pH of 3.59 with 5.6 grams of acidity, but the warmer year is noticeable in the aromas—it has riper fruit and possibly a little more development, like it's going to age a little faster. It's more Mediterranean, with notes of aromatic herbs and spices, and the tannins are a little more rustic, not as elegant as those from wines from 2021 that I tasted next to this. 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2022.

Features

Description

San Vicente is a wine made in La Rioja Alta in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, specifically on the La Canoca estate. The vineyards from which the Vitis vinifera grapes are harvested were planted more than three decades ago, so they are still in their prime.
On the other hand, the soils in which the vines are grown are calcareous-clayey and this means that the grapes are forced to produce a good quantity of tannins, ideal for producing high quality wines!

Winemaking

Firstly, the grapes are harvested by hand, selecting only the best fruit of the hairy Tempranillo variety. The must is then extracted and fermented for ten days and macerated on the skins for 21 days.
Finally, the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for approximately two years. In addition, each barrel is racked every four months in order to eliminate sediments and impurities and thus obtain a superior final product.

Taste

On the nose, this single varietal has an earthy and spicy aroma, with hints of wood. On the palate, it has ripe, powerful notes and a long, creamy finish. It is a fresh and fluid wine with an enveloping and elegant aftertaste.

A wine that will awaken your senses

For this and many other reasons, San Vicente is a wine that will not leave lovers of fruity and sweet accents, such as those offered by its bouquet, indifferent. Moreover, it is a completely organic product, without chemicals or pesticides of any kind, as the vineyards are cultivated following nature's own biorhythm.
Due to its characteristics, it is ideal for accompanying spicy stews based on meats with a complex flavour, such as veal or lamb.
