Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2013 is a cool, late-ripening vintage in Champagne, defined by an October harvest in cool but sunny conditions. With a dosage of 5.5 grams per liter, the 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil possesses a complex, fruity bouquet mingling aromas of orchard fruit with notions of lemon oil, exotic fruits, spring flowers, almond and hints of menthol and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, rich and dense, with lively acids, it’s more complex and incisive than the 2002 and exhibits similar power to the 2012 at this early stage. Despite what was a challenging growing season for some producers, this is a superb Salon with a long, resonant finish.

Features

Description

Salon Brut Blanc de Blancs is a legendary Champagne, produced only in exceptional years. This wine comes from the village of Le Mesnil, located in the Côte des Blancs, and is made from 100% Chardonnay.

Winemaking

This Champagne is the result of the vision of one man, Aimé Salon, who was a passionate connoisseur of the terroir of Le Mesnil. The production of Salon Champagne focuses on the singular: a single region, the Côte de Blancs; a single cru, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger; and a single grape variety, Chardonnay. Moreover, it is a single vintage wine, without any blending. This wine is produced from a one-hectare plot owned by Salon, known as "Salon's garden", and from 19 smaller plots in Mesnil-sur-Oger, selected by Aimé Salon at the beginning of the century. The wines are aged in bottle for an average of 10 years, acquiring complexity and finesse over time.

Taste

Salon Brut Blanc de Blancs stands out for its elegance and complexity on the palate. The nose is supremely elegant, with a dazzling array of aromas ranging from herbs, spices and flowers to pineapple and pear. The attack on the palate is powerful, but a backbone of vibrant acidity lends vivacity, carrying the wine to an ethereal, weightless finish. Flavours include fresh citrus, lemon and grapefruit zest, white and stony minerals, and light notes of pastry and toasted hazelnuts. The finish is dry, with saline minerals lingering on a long, fine, focused finish.
