Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The depth of the nose of the 2020 El Veneno already talks about a much better vintage with very complete and full wines that are floral, expressive and ripe but delicate, what they always look for; delicate wines with power, the proverbial iron fist in the velvet glove. It's varietal, Mediterranean, fresh, expressive, rich and complex, with abundant, chalky tannins that coat your mouth and give it a dry sensation, earthy and mineral. It has more of everything. The finest vintage of El Veneno to date. 9,900 bottles were filled in February 2022.

Description
Pepe Mendoza El Veneno is a jewel of the Spanish Levant that comes from the Alicante region. This wine is 100% Monastrell, a variety grown in a vineyard located in the Alto Vinalopó, 650 metres above sea level. The vineyard is 55 years old and sits on sandy loam soils with limestone.
Winemaking
The elaboration of this wine involves a manual and gentle maceration with indigenous yeasts from the vineyard itself. Fermentation takes place over a period of 8 to 10 days. The wine is then aged for 12 months in new and one-year-old French Allier oak barrels. After this process, the wine remains in the bottle for approximately 8 months before being marketed.
Taste
The taste of Pepe Mendoza El Veneno is a complex and profound combination that reflects the authentic expression of the Mediterranean Monastrell. On the nose, it is fruity, floral and elegant, with predominant notes of lavender, rockrose, undergrowth and Mediterranean pines. On the palate, it is complex, powerful and balanced, offering a taste experience that combines the freshness of the fruit with balsamic touches. In addition to the red and black fruit, it has fresh balsamic touches that make it pleasantly atypical. It is full-bodied, but juicy, with good acidity and delicate tannin, especially for a Monastrell. It is a broad, deep wine with lots of fruit and freshness on the palate.
This wine is ideal for pairing with Iberian cured meats, sheep cheeses and grilled meats. Its ageing potential is great, being optimal for consumption until approximately 2032 if kept in good conditions. Without a doubt, Pepe Mendoza El Veneno is an example of the versatility and richness of the Monastrell variety in the Alicante region.
