Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The phenomenal 2016 Peña Caballera has to be the finest wine bottled by Marañones to date. This Garnacha from an old, north-facing slope is always the most austere red from the winery. But this austerity was limited to the palate in this vintage, as the nose, shy at first, developed nicely in the glass and showed a wild side of flowers, berries, spices and herbs like I don't remember in any vintage before. The palate is compact, with very fine and chalky tannins that could fool you and make you think the vines are on limestone. But sometimes granite is like that... I know this wine improves with two or three years in bottle, so I'd resist pulling the cork now, but it's drinkable if you want it now. 2,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018.
Between 14ºC and 16ºC
Alcoholic fermentation with whole harvest and stems in wood tubs. Aged for 14 months in old French oak barrels of 500 liters. Bottled without filtering nor clarifying.
