Description
Fonterenza Rosso di Montalcino is an organic red wine from the region of Montalcino, a true reflection of the D.O.C. Rosso di Montalcino, made exclusively with the Sangiovese variety, which is grown at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level. The vines from which this wine comes have evocative names such as "Bosco", "Alberello anfiteatro", "Lupo", "Strada" and "Quercia", and their age ranges from 17 to 23 years. The soil in which these vines grow is a rich mix of clay loam, sand and tufa textures.
Winemaking
The agriculture is organic and biodynamic, which guarantees maximum respect for the environment and the essence of the terroir. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and skin maceration for 15 to 20 days. The wine is then aged in 4,500 and 2,000 litre oak vats for 24 to 30 months.
Taste
Fonterenza Rosso di Montalcino is not a second wine or a lower quality version of Brunello. In fact, its vineyards are located in an area historically destined to the production of Brunello and have a clear vocation to produce wines of great structure. This is a different interpretation of Sangiovese in Montalcino, with great ageing potential, but with a shorter ageing that retains its characteristics of rustic youth, exuberance of fruit and a savoury, earthy profile typical of Sangiovese from this region.
This wine comes largely from parcels vinified separately and subsequently blended. The first vintage produced was in 2003. It is described as an excellent Montalcino Rosso, and although it is the simplest wine produced by Fonterenza, it surpasses in quality many other wines from central Italian regions or areas. Sangiovese at its best; smooth and elegant, with a natural touch of tannins, highlighting flavours of red currants and fresh cherries.
