Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Offering up complex aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, confit citrus, frangipane, walnuts, dried white flowers and subtle hints of iodine, Bollinger's 2014 Brut La Grande Année is medium to full-bodied, pillowy and vinous, with an elegantly fleshy core of fruit that's underpinned by racy acids and complemented by a pretty pinpoint mousse. Concluding with a long, chalky finish, this is a charming but precise Grande Année that's more giving and demonstrative than its immediate predecessor, the 2012, but which attains a very similar level of quality in a more challenging vintage—testimony to the serious viticulture that underpins Bollinger's contemporary excellence.

Features

Description

Champagne Bollinger La Grande Année Brut is an exceptional representation of the tradition and expertise of the Champagne region. Only absolutely exceptional vintages become vintage wines in Champagne Bollinger.

Winemaking

Grande Année is made exclusively from Grand and Premier Cru grapes, being the embodiment of the carefully preserved traditional expertise of Champagne Bollinger. A blend of 19 crus, mainly in Aÿ and Verzenay for 61% Pinot Noir and Chouilly and Oiry for 39% Chardonnay. It is vinified in oak barrels, sealed with natural cork and stirred by hand. This champagne has waited patiently for 10 years in Bollinger's chalk cellars. Vinification in oak barrels, an ancient technique, helps to develop aromas of great finesse. Thanks to micro-oxygenation, vinification in oak gives the wine an extraordinary ageing potential. Each bottle of La Grande Année is removed and disgorged by hand.

Taste

La Grande Année is characterised by its intensity and minerality. To the eye, it has golden hues that reflect the maturity of the wine and Bollinger's winemaking techniques. On the nose, it is precise and fruity with a light aroma of the sea. Aromas of cherry and lemon mingle with quince and bergamot. Then, notes of hazelnut and almond, peach and mirabelle plum complete the range of aromas of this wine. On the palate, the initial sensation is one of fine, intense effervescence, followed by a wonderful vinosity, then balanced with delicate acidity. Its very fine texture and marine-like finish bring excellent length to the palate, accompanied by delicate minerality and complex flavours of orchard fruits and citrus.
