Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The ripest of the single vineyard reds, the 2019 Arroyo del Tórtolas comes from an organically but not certified 67-year-old vineyard at 800 meters in altitude on sandy granite soils that are rich in iron. The whole clusters fermented in an oak vat with a very long and soft maceration at less than 25 degrees Celsius. It matured in well-seasoned, neutral barrels of different sizes for one year followed by some time in tank until bottling. In 2019 the three single-vineyard reds go back to their true character, and this one shows juicy berries and deep ripe flavors, some 14.66% alcohol and good freshness. The tannins are fine and quite round, reflecting good ripeness. There is balance and no excess. 3,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020.

Features

Description

Bernabeleva Arroyo del Tórtolas comes from the impressive Arroyo del Tórtolas vineyard, which encompasses only 1.2 hectares of 80 year old vines situated 800 metres above sea level on pure granitic sand. It is one of Bernabeleva's three single vineyard wines, with Arroyo del Tórtolas being the steepest, the highest and the only one facing north. In 2007, Juan Bulnes acquired the lower section of the vineyard and, three years later, completed the parcel.
The sandy granitic sands, known locally as episienite, are ploughed by horses under the control of Miguel Santiago, one of the last two specialists in his field in this area. Despite being one of the first Bernabeleva vineyards to mature, the geological variability and steep location always result in two separate harvests: one from the top and one from the bottom. Yields are naturally low, with each vine producing approximately two bottles of wine.

Winemaking

The grapes are trodden by foot and left to ferment naturally in wooden vats. Fermentation can take up to two months in some years, and the percentage of stems depends on the vintage. Ageing takes place in 500 and 600 litre barrels for 12 months, after which the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Taste

Bernabeleva Arroyo del Tórtolas is seen as the Garnacha wine with the most Gredos typicity in the Bernabeleva wine portfolio. While Viña Bonita, coming from south-facing vines, offers a deeper and denser expression, Arroyo del Tórtolas offers something pure, delicate and limpid. Its aromas, infused with floral essences, are captivating, and its palate, gracefully structured, blossoms with an intriguing mineral nuance.
