Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Malvasía is the first white I tasted from the collection of 2021 whites, a wine that showcases what's to come from the rest of the 2021 whites; freshness, precision, clarity and symmetry, elegance and subtleness. The wines are extremely young and tender, and all are produced in the same way—fermented in barrel, where it matured with the lees and bâtonnage for some five months. They have not changed much, but they are fine-tuning the barrels and coopers they use and have started using some 500-liter barrels, not only 225-liter ones like in the past. The Malvasía is the lowest in alcohol, 13%, and has incredible freshness, a pH of3.17 and almost six grams of acidity—unheard of parameters for the variety. The wine is delicate and ethereal like never before. 3,858 bottles were filled in April 2022.

Features

Description

The first single varietal of the San Vicente de la Sonsierra winery was the Abel Mendoza Malvasía wine. Many of its grapes come from old vines, more than 50 years old, which are planted in clay-limestone soils with little organic matter, one of the reasons why this wine is so exquisite!

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, collecting the Malvasia grapes in small boxes and picking the berries by hand. During 4-5 months, the wine ferments in French oak barrels with its lees.
This Rioja white wine is bottled and marketed after a maturation period of three months.

Taste

Smooth and delicate in the mouth, with a balanced and complex palate that reveals a wonderful blend of ripeness and freshness with the passage of time. A white wine that evolves slowly and improves in the bottle over time.
This freshness that the Abel Mendoza Malvasía wine presents is produced through a well-integrated acidity. In addition, despite having fermented in oak, it lacks oak odors, which makes it a real wild card at the table.

A very traditional wine

Abel Mendoza Malvasía is a wine that revives one of the classic varietals of La Rioja, which had been on the verge of disappearing due to its sensitivity to botrytis and the irregularity of its production. It is essential not to confuse Malvasía Riojana with the aromatic Malvasías, as they do not even belong to the same family. Malvasía Riojana is the local name for the grape known as Subirat Parent in Catalonia and Alarije in Extremadura.
And you, haven't you tried Abel Mendoza's classic yet? You're late!
