Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch bursts from the glass with oak-laced apple pie, peach preserves and ripe pineapple scents plus hints of allspice, candied ginger and praline. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a gorgeous satiny texture and loads of stone fruit and tropical fruit layers, finishing on a lingering spicy note.

Features

Description

Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is a white wine that bears the elegant stamp of its vineyard, a 27-acre site that sprawls across the pastoral hills of Los Carneros, a place where the Napa Valley meets the northernmost edge of the San Francisco Bay. Thanks to the bay's sea breezes, the region enjoys a long, consistent growing season, ideal for producing superior quality Chardonnay.
The vineyard is named in honour of the red-shouldered hawks that, along with other birds of prey, play a vital role in our sustainable farming practices. These hawks and kestrels reward us by keeping the population of rodents harmful to the vines under control, avoiding the need for rodent poisons and keeping our vineyards and soils healthy.

Elaboration

The vineyard is planted with five clones of Chardonnay, selected for their small clusters, low yields and the rich, seductive flavours and textures each brings to the final wine. During the harvest, the grapes are fully pressed and the must ferments completely with indigenous yeasts in barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for 14 months in new French oak (75%) and stainless steel (25%) barrels, without full malolactic fermentation.

Taste

Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is a refreshing and vibrant Chardonnay characterised by lush aromas that fill the glass with white flowers, lemon zest and exotic fruits. On the palate, it offers a graceful balance of energy and richness, with flavours of white melon, apricot, ripe pineapple, flint, honey and crème brûlée. With its pure Chablis-style acidity, this vintage offers effortless structure and elegant balance with a long, luscious finish.
