Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The single-vineyard 2015 El Quemado comes from a 0.5-hectare plot planted with Tempranillo and 5% Garnacha at 1,000 meters in altitude in the village of Covarrubias in Arlanza that hadn't been produced since 2011. It fermented with 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts with daily foot treading and matured in new French barrique for 12 months followed by a further seven months in used oak barrels and two months in tank. It's serious and ripe without excess, with a somewhat rustic elegance and personality, not showy or aromatic, but harmonious. The tannins are fine-grained and the finish dry. It might require some more months in bottle and should evolve nicely for quite some time. 1,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2017.

Features

Description

El Quemado is named after a Covarrubias estate at least 60 years old in Ribera del Arlanza. Old vines, in combination with other varieties, are what make up this feat. It is a totally serious wine, mature and with a very elegant profile.
The characteristics of this wine stand out for having exclusive touches and for being scarce, as it was a rainy and fresh vintage. So, it is a red wine you cannot miss!

Winemaking

It is made from Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, both extracted from a plot located at an altitude of 1000 metres above sea level. It underwent an artisanal vinification process, using used French oak barrels, and was bottled without filtering or fining. So, if you buy a bottle, you will probably find tiny natural residues in it.

Taste

The Quemado has a soft bouquet, its depth is superb, its nuance includes chalky tannins and its identity is serious, with plenty of balance and flavoursome, supple notes. On the palate it is powerful and full-bodied, its length is both resistant and gourmand, a marvellous Olivier Rivière!

A very tasty limited edition

According to Parker, El Quemado is an impressive red wine, not something that is produced in just any year. Its organoleptic characteristics and distinguished personality make it perfect for any occasion. It is therefore a treasure among the wines of La Rioja, as it brings out the unmistakable flavours of the area.
