Description
Occhipinti Siccagno is an expression of Nero d'Avola, a variety that evokes the essence of Sicily. This variety is not only wild but also fresh and elegant, with flavours reminiscent of red fruits. Nero d'Avola has a noble and aristocratic character, but it can also be melancholic, like a poet or a philosopher. It is passionate, full of warmth and contrasts, and it is the grape that has united Sicily from corner to corner for centuries. It is a wine that Arianna Occhipinti, the creator, loves deeply and has been with her since the first year of its production.
Winemaking
It is grown at an altitude of 280 metres above sea level on medium density soils composed of red sands and chalk coming from sub-apennine limestone rocks. Agriculture is organic, without chemical intervention. The pruning system used is Guyot and Alberello, with an average vine age of 35 years and a planting density of 6,000 plants per hectare.
The grapes are harvested by hand in the first fortnight of October. Fermentation is carried out only with wild yeasts and has a 30-day skin maceration. Ageing is carried out for 22 months in 2,500 litre Slovenian oak vats, followed by 2 months in the bottle unfiltered.
Taste
What an excellent expression of Nero D'Avola! It has clear plum and raspberry flavours, with some floral accents, and also a citrus acidity that lightens its medium body. On the palate there is a certain minerality, like saline earth, and clear flavours of olive and lime. The tannins are delicate with a pleasant, light sensation. What a great varietal from Arianna Occhipinti!
