Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2012 Graf Zweigelt has a dark ruby color and opens with a deep, perfectly ripe, nicely oxidative and spicy nose with ripe cherry and cinnamon notes. On the palate, this is a pure, deep, fresh, plummy, tightly woven Zweigelt with floral aromas and good vitality. Tasted July 2018.

Features

Description

Since the dawn of its existence, the Muster winery has proudly borne the title of "Graf", which in German means Count. This noble distinction represents not only the tradition and heritage of the estate, but also the dedication and respect with which each bottle of wine is crafted, as is particularly the case with Muster Graf Zweigelt. In homage to this lineage, the Graf line of wines is made from old vines planted in the poor Opok soil. These vines, which are around 40 years old, have witnessed the cultivation of varieties such as Zweigelt, Morillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Strategically located between the higher altitude Sgaminegg and the slightly lower Opok line, the Graf vineyard represents the heart and centre of the estate.

Winemaking

The meticulous Muster Graf Zweigelt winemaking begins with the manual harvesting of the Zweigelt grapes, which are then destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation is carried out in 2,400-litre oval oak vats, using the winery's own indigenous yeasts. After this process, the wine matures for approximately 2 years in neutral wood barrels. Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtering, and without adding sulphur.

Taste

Muster Graf Zweigelt is a symphony of flavours and aromas that invite you to discover them again and again. Notes of cherry and oak predominate, accompanied by tobacco leaves, nutmeg and blueberry. But that's not all, as its complexity reveals up to 300 different nuances that surprise with each tasting. On the nose, reductive and earthy aromas unfold, followed by red fruits such as cherries and blackberries, and hints of dried herbs, ink, wood and old leather. The palate is refreshing, with crisp acidity and a dry finish, peppered with blueberry bitterness and a mineral salinity. It is a wine that, while already lovely, promises to evolve beautifully if given the chance to rest for another 5 years.
