Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Stolzenberg GG is fresh on the attack and shows fine-bred acidity to the juicy-piquant and clear fruit. Toward the finish, the wine is still quite yeasty and somewhat buttery as well as sweetish and structurally rather short acting. It shows less convincing today than usual. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2023.

Features

Description

Heymann Löwenstein Stolzenberg GG wine is born in a vineyard located in the municipality of Hatzenport. Its name, Stolzenberg, translates as "Pride Mountain", and is a fitting representation of its status, as it has been and still is the most prestigious vineyard and the pride of the town of Hatzenport.
From a geological point of view, the vineyard is located in a Devonian formation, specifically in the layers of the Nellenköpfchen hillside. The soil is characterised by grey-brown sandy slate, in some cases highly laminated. Two plots are cultivated in this vineyard, totalling 0.6 ha. With a south-facing orientation, an elevation varying between 100 and 180 metres and a slope ranging between 100 and 150%, the vines have an average age of more than 40 years. This location and characteristics have given it the classification of VDP.GROSSE LAGE.

Elaboration

The winemaking process is meticulous and natural. It is vinified exclusively with indigenous yeasts in oak vats. No enzymes or fining agents are added. In addition, the wine matures on its lees until the summer. Stolzenberg wines are produced in a trocken (dry) version.

Taste

The taste of Heymann Löwenstein Stolzenberg is an experience in itself. Ripe notes of plum and quince stand out, accompanied by a strong hint of ginger. Its entry and mid-palate are of supreme elegance, culminating in an impressive finish with a breathtaking mineral display. In addition, there are smoky and fresh aromas of citrus and peach, intertwined with fresh herbalism. Creamy initial flavours mingle with elegant acidity and a spicy, savoury minerality that lingers on the palate. Dark chocolate accents, remarkable structure and depth, and an exceptionally long finish are also detectable.
