Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Röttgen GG opens with classic smokiness as well as ripe Riesling aromas. Silky, juicy and savory on the palate, with grippy acidity and dark slate spiciness, the 2022 is a rather baroque yet also vital Riesling with a penchant for punk rock. Tasted as a sample at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2023.

Features

Description

Heymann-Löwenstein Röttgen Riesling GG is more than a wine; it is an experience that combines history, geology and winemaking tradition in a bottle.
The Röttgen estate has deep historical and geological roots. The name "Röttgen" means "to clear", and in many German place names, it appears in its diminutive form as "Röttgen". The slopes where this wine is grown were initially too steep to be cultivated, and it was not until the arrival of the Prussian army in the 1820s that terraces could be formed on these steep hills. The geology of the site is defined by Devonian blue slate, which, due to its iron content, oxidises rapidly on contact with air, giving a primary impression of yellow-brown colouring. In some areas, the heat of the sun even extracts the oil from the slate, leaving a blue glow on the hill.

Elaboration

The winemaking of this wine is very traditional. Four plots are cultivated in Röttgen, totalling 2.1 ha. The wine is vinified exclusively with wild yeasts in wooden barrels, without the addition of enzymes or fining agents. It matures at least until the summer of the year following the harvest on its lees. Röttgen wines are produced dry and bear the designation VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. In notable years, the sweet wines Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese are also produced from the same parcel.

Taste

Heymann-Löwenstein Röttgen Riesling GG is an explosion of sensations on the palate. Notes of musk, earth and sun-ripened peach aromas are prominent. Earthy vapours intertwine with hints of citrus, creating a pulsating circuit on the palate that leaves Riesling aficionados breathless from the first sip. It also has a saline finish and hints of yellow fruits dressed with thin layers of walnut and coffee. Its minerality is exceptional, and its length on the palate is impressive.
