Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2020 was not produced, and this label was discontinued and replaced by a new wine with a different concept (La Tendida), so I only tasted the 2019 Vino de Finca, a blend of 75% Monastrell and 25% Garnacha from this unusual vintage. It fermented with 25% to 30% whole clusters, which resulted in a wine with 14.5% alcohol. As is usually the case here, the wine matured in a combination of used 500-liter barriques and 5,000-liter oak vats for one year. There is a faint sensation of ripeness, and it feels richer than other wines, a little balsamic and medicinal, and it has some dusty tannins. This is a wine that still follows a more powerful profile, like previous vintages. 26,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2020.

Features

Description

Casa Castillo Vino de Finca is an excellent representation of the oldest vines from the five plots of the Casa Castillo winery, located in the Jumilla region. This wine has been made mainly from the local red varieties Monastrell ( 75%) and 25% Garnacha. It stands out for its intense colour, expressive nose and fresh, refined taste. Its fruity character and persistence in the mouth make it particularly remarkable.

Winemaking

The selection of this wine comes from old vines from five plots, over 30 years old. These vines grow in sandy loam soils covered with limestone, under a continental Mediterranean climate. Harvesting is done by hand.
As for its vinification, 50% of the wine was fermented in underground vats with whole grapes, while the other 50% followed traditional fermentation in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine was aged for 14 months in 500-litre barrels and 5,000-litre foudres.

Taste

Casa Castillo Vino de Finca has a deep cherry colour with a violet rim. On the nose, it is very aromatic and expressive, with floral notes unusual in Monastrell wines. Aromas of ripe fruit, dried herbs, red fruit and spicy touches can be perceived.
On the palate, it is elegant, balanced and fresh, with a refined palate and great length. It has a fruity aftertaste, with ripe fruit flavours, some spice, ripe tannins and a mineral touch.
It is ideal for pairing with rice dishes, white meats and pasta dishes.
