Description
Algueira Merenzao Risco is an exceptional wine that reflects the expertise of Adega Algueira. This wine, made from the indigenous Merenzao (Trousseau) grape variety, comes from several southwest-facing plots in the Ribeira Sacra region.
Winemaking
The uniqueness of Algueira Merenzao Risco is due in part to its winemaking process, where whole bunches are trodden with the feet in 600-litre barrels, followed by cold maceration and fermentation with 100% stems without yeast inoculation. This artisanal process ensures a unique expression of the terroir and the grape variety.
The ageing of Algueira Merenzao Risco takes place in old 225-litre French oak barrels for approximately 6 to 12 months, followed by tank maturation. This ageing in French oak brings complexity and smoothness to the wine, while respecting the pure expression of the Merenzao grape. The gneiss and slate soil of the plots, together with the region's Mediterranean microclimate with Atlantic influence, contribute to the uniqueness of this wine.
Taste
In the glass, Algueira Merenzao Risco has a low cherry-coloured robe, indicative of its delicacy. On the nose, floral and herbaceous aromas stand out, complemented by balsamic notes such as nutmeg and cedar. On the palate, the wine surprises with its balance and almost silky texture. Despite its aromatic delicacy, it is firm on the palate, with ripe tannins and a crisp finish. Flavours of grapefruit, cherry and cherry liqueur intertwine with subtle balsamic notes, creating a unique and memorable sensory experience.
