Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Aromas of dusty berries, cherries, warm spices and petals introduce the 2020 Fonroque, a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy wine with a vibrant core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish. As readers may remember, part of Fonroque's biodynamically farmed holdings are located on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, and the rest on the slopes, with more clay and colluvium.

Features

Description

Château Fonroque is a renowned wine, classified as Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. This wine stands out for its commitment to organic and biodynamic agriculture, certified since 2006 and 2008 respectively. The vineyard covers 17.60 hectares with an average age of the vines of 35 years. The terroir is characterised by a limestone plateau and a limestone clay slope. The grape varieties used are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Winemaking

Château Fonroque is made using a meticulous process that begins with hand harvesting in crates, followed by a careful selection of grapes on arrival at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete tanks, adapted to the terroir, the age of the vines and the grape variety. Extraction is gentle and slow, adjusted to the potential of each tank. Ageing takes place 30% in large new barrels and 70% in small barrels that have contained at least one wine or in small tanks. The average production is 50,000 to 70,000 bottles per year.

Taste

Château Fonroque presents itself as a rich and generous wine, maintaining a remarkable balance. It offers aromas of blackberries, cassis, menthol, liquorice and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied, ample and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, powdery tannins and lively acids. It is notable for its ripe blue fruit profile, with notes of baked blueberries, cassis, cherries, chocolate, liquorice and sweet spices. This wine reflects the elegance and refinement of its oak ageing, along with a lingering finish that reflects its harmonious maturation.
