DO Toro is located at the southeast of the city of Zamora, and it spreads over the province (12 municipalities) and part of neighbour Valladolid (3 municipalities). Toro wine production area includes 6.000 hectares of extreme continental climate, with Atlantic influences and arid weather: bleak winters with very cold temperatures and short summers not very warm, with significant temperature changes. Rainfall is scarce but the hours of sunlight are quite important. Toro soils are deep, loose, stony, with low fertility and smooth topography.
Toro wines were traditionally powerful, alcoholic, acid and full of colour, but over time the proceedings have gained concern and consideration. Here the overriding variety is Tinta de Toro, which provides aromatic wines with good structure. DO Toro allows the use of Garnacha up to a 10% in the winemaking process.
