DO Bierzo is placed at the northeast of León province and encompasses 23 municipalities. Geologically speaking this is a tectonic depression country surrounded by important mountain ranges, slightly opened at the southeast through the Sil river valley which allows the reception of the Atlantic influence, thus the area is granted with climatic features both Mediterranean and Atlantic: gentle temperatures, high sunlight hours and good watering conditions.
The total 4.000 hectares are divided in small landholdings settled in plains and semi-terraced hillsides, with steep slopes and prevalence of brown humid soils barely acidic.
Bierzo is nowadays one of the winemaking areas with greatest potential and wide international recognition. The most typical wines of DO Bierzo are red wines produced with Mencía variety; wines with violet shades, good acidity, fruity aroma, mineral, with juicy tannins and good structure. The most representative varieties of white wines are Godello, Doña Blanca and Palomino Fino.
